Wine Dine and Sing Along!
Unlike many of the jazz and duo acts out there today, Sweet78 was born of a certain dream... music to eat by. Vocalist, Serena Andrews’s creamy old fashioned phrasings sail over the hollow-body guitar stylings of Stan Munslow, a Berklee graduate and Coventry area guitar instructor. The music is lively, funny, sophisticated and best of all...not too loud!
The magic of this act is all in the nuances and details; lyrics, a turn of phrase, a complex chord and an implied beat. Such things are often lost or missing in live acts these days. That’s what makes Sweet78 such a great pleasure.
Though they usually remain a duo, Sweet78 can also be expanded by request to include cocktail drums, bass and even piano! Still, no matter the configuration, carefully chosen musicians create a sound tailored perfectly for a dining room or cocktail hour setup.
Something Old, Something New
Sweet78’s name refers to the old 78 records of ago, and fittingly so. The songs covered by this duo include favorite popular jazz tunes from as early as the 1920s to as recent as the mid 1960s. There is a common thread, of course. Most of the songs are standards by greats such as Duke Ellington, Gershwin and Nat King Cole, featuring clever lyrics and catchy melodies.
Despite the old-style selections and the duo’s bent to recall the sweetness of that style, there is something fresh and new being brought to the mix here! A certain energy and effervescence that must be experienced to be understood. From lightly swung walking bass-lines, to lilting ballads and sultry bossa novas, the feeling is akin to a dream--like a real bona fide form of time-travel! Right down to the attire which is true to the time window, as well!
Whether it is a restaurant, event or wedding you are seeking to book, this charming duo will lend a performance and memories that will not be forgotten!
